When describing a painting, I first of all say what the subject is, then I go on to the main character and from there to the secondary figures in the same group; then to the group linked with the first, allowing myself to be led by the connections between them; then to expression, characteristics, draperies, colouring, the distribution of light and shade, the additional features and finally the impression given by the whole. If I follow a different order, then my description is badly done, or else the painting is badly composed.
