Critical Theory
Critical theory was originally developed by the Frankfurt School. It utilized a process known as Immanent Criticism which pointed out the contradictions between bourgeois ideals of justice, equality and freedom and the social reality of the situation. In this way critical theory hoped to inform peoples of their social reality by criticizing a culture on the grounds of what it claims to be and the process by which it makes those acclamations.
